VIDEO: Anchorage continues to see a spike in pedestrians fatally being hit by vehicles. From 2000 to 2025, the municipality has had a total of 194 people die from these types of collisions, with 30 of those deaths occurring since 2023. The city says this comes after it saw the highest number of pedestrians killed by vehicles in 2024 in the past decade, with the largest number of those deaths occurring in September.
According to the Anchorage Police Department, October and November are the most dangerous months for pedestrians, due to the lack of light. As of July 1, Anchorage is already at 10 deaths for the year. โYeah, extremely concerned,โ Bradly Coy, the Municipality of Anchorage Traffic Engineering Director, said. โItโs definitely something we talk about daily.โ
Coy wants to spread awareness about pedestrian safety and the rules of the road. Especially, he said, after the jaywalking ordinance changed in 2023. โThe term jaywalking wasnโt ever in code. Itโs not clearly defined. And so really what weโre talking about here is where is it legal to cross the street and where is it not legal to cross the street,โ Coy said. โThere are few concepts that are at play that arenโt as well understood.โ
