Anchorage mayor signs emergency proclamation to help Halong evacuees

VIDEO: Mayor Suzanne LaFrance signed an emergency proclamation Friday afternoon to help support the state’s ongoing emergency response to former Typhoon Halong in Western Alaska. Over the last 48 hours, hundreds of evacuees have been flown to Anchorage and are staying in make-shift shelters. The mayor signed the emergency proclamation during a special Assembly meeting Friday afternoon.

“We have welcomed hundreds of evacuees over the last several days and we know that more families are coming,” LaFrance said at a press conference following the meeting. “We are supporting the Governor’s disaster response efforts with emergency shelters and services.” The emergency proclamation will give the Municipality of Anchorage the authority to request assistance from the State of Alaska for the provision of any funds, services, functions, supplies or materials determined by the Office of Emergency Management to be necessary to meet public safety and health needs.
