Alaska smokejumpers make first wildfire jump of season at the Crooked Fire

Twelve Alaska Fire Service smokejumpers made their first jump of the season Saturday in response to a small wildfire in Interior Alaska. The Bureau of Land Management said that an AFS helicopter crew and Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection engine crew assisted in the response.

That night, AFS quickly contained the Crooked Fire at about 25 acres near mile 117.5 on the Steese Highway, about 7.5 miles west of Central. The fire was threatening campers and heavy equipment nearby, according to Alaska Wildland Fire Information. The fire has since been extinguished, officials say.
