Weather hinders controlled burn in Gulf State Park, more fire planned

PHOTOS: Flames racing through the dry underbrush of Gulf State Park could be a scary sight, but in this case, it is a good thing. Forty acres along the northern shore of Lake Shelby and near the cabins took only a few hours to burn.

When the day started, Rickey Fields with Alabama Forestry said a much bigger fire was planned. โ€œThe original plan was to burn about 200 acres here in the state park; however, our fire weather has deteriorated throughout the day, so we are going to compartmentalize it down to about 40 acres,โ€ he said.

The fire weather he is talking about includes a certain amount of wind needed to push the flames and blow the smoke away. โ€œAs you can see, the smoke is not really participating today, so we are just going to cut it off to 40 acres and plan a burn in the future,โ€ said Fields.
