Madison County students learn firefighting skills in first year class

VIDEO: Students in the Madison County School System are close to wrapping up their first year enrolled in the countyโ€™s fire science program. Students in the program learn hands-on training used by firefighters in various scenarios. โ€œWeโ€™re doing hazmat, so that tank is supposed to simulate a DOT 407 tank (chemical tanker),โ€ said student Ethan Gann. โ€œWe have to learn about that because itโ€™s something we may see on a daily basis in the future.โ€ The program has five students for the 2024-2025 school year. Each student who talked to WAFF 48 news said they were pleased with the class. โ€œIt makes us more prepared for when we go into it,โ€ Gann said. โ€œWe can have more experience and save a whole lot more lives and a whole lot of things in the future than if we decided to go straight out of high school into a fire department.โ€
