Homewood Fire Department surpasses national average for CPR success

VIDEO: If you have an emergency in Homewood, youโ€™ll be in good hands! The Homewood Fire Department says while the national CPR success rate average is 20%, they have a 60% success rate. They say there are a few reasons for the success, including their use of the LUCAS device theyโ€™ve had since 2022. It provides mechanical chest compressions to patients in cardiac arrest. Homewood Fire Battalion Chief Evan VanArsdale says in the last six months, they also started utilizing the pit crew method. He says new Medical Director Dr. Shea Duerring is to thank for putting this new protocol in place. The pit crew method is when each crew member has an assigned task before they get to the scene. VanArsdale says the operation moves a lot smoother this way.
