High heat making outdoor working conditions miserable for Scottsboro-area firefighters

VIDEO: Just because the days keep getting hotter and hotter, it doesn’t mean that people who work outside get the day off. Local roofers told WAFF 48 News that working in this heat is miserable, but they are doing their best to try and stay cool.

Austin Ayers is a firefighter with the Scottsboro Fire Department. He said it doesn’t matter what time of year it is; the gear they wear is hot, but they know how to keep themselves cool. Ayers said that this time of year, they see an increase in heat-related emergency calls. He adds that it is not just people who work outside who are affected by this heat; he says anybody can suffer from heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

“With heat exhaustion, you are going to see excessive sweating, nausea, vomiting, you can be faint or dizzy. And that is not so much as an emergency as it is a sign to hydrate and take a break. Heat stroke, you are going to see sensations of sweating, the individual could faint or collapse, and your heart could be beating a lot faster,” said Ayers.
