Four rescued from apartment blaze in Birmingham

Four people were rescued from an apartment fire in Birmingham Friday evening. Birmingham Fire and Rescue said firefighters responded to the two-story structure in the 1100 block of Cullom Street South around 6:21 p.m. When they arrived, firefighters observed heavy fire showing from the structure and were informed multiple people were possibly trapped. Battalion Chief Clay Hendon said two of the rescued people were treated and released at the scene while the other two were transported to local hospitals for further treatment. Their conditions are unknown but considered serious. Hendon said the two who remained at the scene had minor smoke inhalation and burns. There were a total of four units in the building, all of which were damaged.
