Foley City Council approves fire department overhaul

The Foley City Council has approved a reorganization of the fire department, adding new jobs to the department and giving current firefighters the chance to advance. According to a City of Foley news release, the reorganization will add an advanced firefighter position and a dedicated driver operator position.

โ€œCurrently, with our firefighter positions, between our entry-level position and our lieutenantโ€™s position, which is the next-ranked officer, thereโ€™s a five pay-grade difference,โ€ Fire Chief Joey Darby said. โ€œThis will give us some real good bandwidth to be able to add some positions.โ€

Darby also said the restructuring will allow the department to recruit more firefighters. โ€œWe will have more of an entry-level position, but also show that upward mobility,โ€ Darby said. โ€œWe think thatโ€™ll make us a little more attractive, competitive in the market.โ€
