EMS in Colbert County becomes first in the Shoals to offer blood transfusions in the field

VIDEO: Helen Keller Hospital EMS crews now have the ability to administer blood in the field. According to a post made by the hospital, this new program can be a potentially lifesaving resource for patients who need critical intervention in the pre-hospital environment. “With the launch of this program, Keller EMS becomes the first ground ambulance service in the Shoals to carry and provide blood,” the post read. According to WAFF 48 News partner, the Times Daily, the blood will be carried in specialized coolers on Keller EMS’ quick response vehicles. The 11 critical care paramedics will maintain the O-positive blood, and they are also the paramedics who are qualified to administer the blood in the field. Officials told the Times Daily that blood administration will currently only be available for Colbert County, but they hope to see the offer expand to the rest of the Keller EMS service area.
