Childersburg EMS will have new ways to help save your life in an emergency through a partnership with UAB. Captain Shane Phillips with the Childersburg Fire Department says being located between Birmingham and any other trauma center puts them in a unique position. Captain Phillips says along with Birmingham, Pelham, and southeast Shelby County, his department will now carry blood products on their ambulances to help them treat trauma patients faster. Phillips says those blood products include whole blood and plasma. He says when patients are suffering from gunshot wounds, traumatic injuries, and different types of bleeds, time is critical. Captain Phillips calls the UAB program a game changer for his department.
