VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Walker County Public Defender’s office is a pile of rubble after a fire Saturday morning, July 5. The State Fire Marshal is now investigating the incident.
Jasper Fire and Rescue was called to the fire on Saturday around 4:30 a.m. Fire Chief Chris Uptain said it took his crew 12 hours to put out the fire. “The law office next door sustained heavy smoke damage and water damage. Pretty much all down the strip had smoke damage from worse to less worse as you go down,” said Uptain. The Walker County Public Defender’s office said they are currently looking for a temporary place to work. Leaders said the paper files for 2,500 cases were destroyed. However, most of the information is digital and accessible. Right now, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
