Birmingham Fire and Rescue warns about potential hazards from holiday lights and trees

VIDEO: Birmingham Fire and Rescue is sharing fire prevention tips as residents decorate their homes for the holidays. Officials say while lights can add extra cheer, they can also be a fire hazard. Fire officials recommend unplugging lights before leaving the house or going to bed.

If you have a live Christmas tree, keep it watered, as the drier it is, the more of a hazard it becomes. Keep pets away from the tree to prevent them from knocking it down, and make sure lights are being used outside if they’re outdoor lights.

Lt. Catina Williams with Birmingham Fire and Rescue said if you notice frayed spots on your lights, throw them away. Williams also says to be mindful of where you are setting up your tree. If it’s in front of a door or window, it could be blocking an exit in an emergency.
