VIDEO: The Cranston Fire Department has become the first in Rhode Island to test new cancer-screening technology.
EsoGuard is a non-invasive DNA test, introduced by Lucid Diagnostics, aimed at detecting esophageal cancer in its early stages.
It is designed for individuals who meet three or more risk factors, including being male, white, over 50, obese, a smoker, and having a family history of or experiencing chronic GERD symptoms.
Firefighters face a significantly higher risk of cancer due to exposure to carcinogens in their work environment. According to research, they have a 62% increased chance of developing esophageal cancer.
This elevated risk is why Lt. Ryan Tellier of the Cranston Fire Department decided to participate in the screenings during Tuesday’s event.
