The Walker Fire Department and DTE are investigating after reports of a natural gas smell have moved throughout Ottawa and Kent counties. Authorities said the smell was last noticed in the Standale area, and that the smell is now moving in a northeast direction through Kent County. Working with Ottawa County fire officials, the Walker Fire Department said they discovered the smell is related to a Mercaptan release. Mercaptan is a compound used in natural gas that produces a detectable odor for safety reasons. Walker officials said there was no danger to the public, and the wind moved the smell across Walker, Alpine and Plainfield Township. If you smell natural gas and are concerned, you're encouraged to contact your local fire department for them to investigate.
