Hawaii Island firefighters are battling a wind-driven brush fire that broke out Tuesday night in the Waimea area. Authorities said the fire began around 9:30 p.m. along Kohala Mountain Road and made its way down to Kawaihae Road. At last check, it was burning near the Kamuela View Estates neighborhood. Crews deployed two bulldozers due to the rough terrain. Officials said there have been no reports of damaged homes or injuries. There were no mandatory evacuations. Officials estimate about 500 to 700 acres have burned so far, but it was difficult to determine the exact acreage due to darkness.
