The Valdosta Fire Department’s fourth annual 9/11 5K Memorial Run will take place Sept. 7, 2024. The event honors the lives lost and the first responders who died during the Sept. 11 terror attacks in 2001. In the attacks, 343 firefighters and paramedics plus 60 police officers died. Participants are encouraged to dress in red, white, and blue and to decorate the racecourse with signs of support, a statement from the City of Valdosta said. The race will commence with a speech by Mayor Scott Matheson at 7:45 a.m., followed by the starting gun at 8 a.m. The course, a fast out-and-back route, will begin at 120 N. Patterson St. in Downtown Valdosta and pass by Valdosta State University. All of the race proceeds will be donated to Valor Service Dogs Inc., an organization dedicated to providing trained service dogs to veterans in need.
