VIDEO: It was a busy weekend for fire crews across the area. Several blazes broke out across four counties destroying homes and even forcing the evacuation of a popular Tybee Island landmark. Officials evacuated Tybee Island’s pier as a precaution Saturday afternoon while firefighters battled a brush blaze along nearby dunes. Monday, charred brush remains. “It shocked me. I was really scared about it getting on the pavilion and anyone getting hurt about it and the sand dunes. The sand dunes are off limits for a reason,” said Tybee visitor Elizabeth Shockey. Investigators have not released a cause but several witnesses reported hearing popping sounds before the flames started. The dunes are considered crucial for animal habitats and storm water protection. Local biologists say the plants here are resilient.
