VIDEO: The second annual 9/11 Memorial Lap took place on Wednesday evening.
Local firefighters and first responders jogged around a 1.6-mile trail to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
The event was inspired by an idea that Chief Jay Schall conceived while exercising at the location last year.
Schall, who was an 18-year-old firefighter at the time of the attacks, recalled the moment the first plane struck the World Trade Center.
Before the run began, participants observed a moment of reflection with a firefighter’s prayer.
“It was the saddest, most powerful moment of my life, and we had to sit and reflect,” Schall said.
Although he did not travel to New York City at the time due to his age, Schall has always been driven to honor the memory of those who lost their lives.
