Firefighters made quick work of a basement fire on Tuesday, containing it to the area of origin and saving the home from more extensive damage.
Firefighters were dispatched to 43 Judd Ave. around 10:30 a.m. after someone from the home called 911 and said there was an active fire.
The residents, an elderly couple, were able to get out of the single-family home safely before firefighters arrived, according to New Britain fire Chief Raul Ortiz.
The first responding units encountered a fire in the basement of the home, which was traveling up the walls.
“They contained it to the area of origin, but there was some smoke throughout the house,” Ortiz said.
Ortiz said the couple likely won’t be able to return to the home today because of the smoke that made its way throughout the living area.
