A Hoffman Street home was damaged by fire Wednesday morning, according to the Torrington Fire Department.
Members received a call just after 9 a.m. from 143 Hoffman St. reporting heavy black smoke coming from the first floor of a three-story multifamily house.
First responders were Engine 4, Engine 2, Truck 1 and District 1, according to a statement from Battalion Chief Thomas Sterling Jr.
“Upon our arrival, we found a three-story wood frame residential structure with three apartments in the building,” Sterling said. “We had black smoke showing from the first-floor doorway, and District 1 reported a working fire.”
Firefighters searched the house and found a fire in the basement, with heavy smoke coming from the basement stairway. Members put a hose into the stairway to put out the fire, while others forced their way into the first- and second-floor apartments to search for any victims.
