More than 50 firefighters battled a two-alarm blaze at a building housing hazardous chemicals Tuesday night.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department was dispatched to 3030 North El Paso Street just after 6 p.m.
“When we first got here, heavy smoke throughout the entire building pushing everywhere throughout,” said CSFD Lt. Aaron McConnellogue.
One employee was inside the building when the fire ignited, and he was able to get out safely, McConnellogue said.
As they began the firefight, crews were alerted that chemicals inside the structure could be a concern.
“Due to the structure of itself being a little bit older, we have concerns of hazardous materials. The owners are on scene and they have let us know about some of the volatile chemicals that are inside that are causing some issues for us,” McConnellogue said.
