Woman critically injured attempting to escape Birmingham house fire

A woman was rescued from a burning house in Ensley early Monday morning. According to the Birmingham Fire Department, crews were called to the 1000 block of 45th Street just before 1 a.m. When they arrived, firefighters found the woman hanging out of a rear window of the home while the kitchen was burning. The woman had cuts on her arms and hands. It appears the woman was trying to escape from the fire. She was taken to UAB Hospital in critical condition. A search of the house revealed that she was the only one present at the time of the fire. There were no other injuries. The case of the fire is under investigation.
