Oregon State Fire Marshal

Location: Northwest, Southwest, and Eastern Counties

The mission of the Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is “protecting life, property and the environment from fire and hazardous materials” and accomplishes this through our five divisions and their programs.  We work with the Oregon fire service consisting of over 300 fire districts/departments and more than 13,000 fire firefighters to ensure our mutual missions and priorities are accomplished.

As a Deputy State Fire Marshal (DSFM), you will operate within your assigned region and support the local fire agencies and communities within that geographic area.  

You will be responsible for:

  • Oversee, coordinate, and lead/assist with fire investigations to determine origin and cause following established division protocols and national standards using in-depth technical knowledge, tools, and advanced fire origin and cause methodology and techniques to investigate. The State Fire Marshal may investigate or cause an investigation to be made to determine the probable cause, origin and circumstances of any fire and shall classify such findings as the State Fire Marshal may find appropriate to promote fire protection and prevention.
  • Lead or participate in multi-agency fire investigation teams or task forces on larger incidents, to expand capacity to assist with origin and cause of fires if needed.
  • Enforce state adopted and nationally recognized fire and life safety laws, codes, standards, and regulations in existing buildings by conducting inspections to review and evaluate operations and processes, building construction, and fire protection features in addition to conducting plan review for fire department access and water supply, in addition to assisting with other fire prevention services.
  • This position may be utilized during all-hazards emergencies to provide assistance in a variety of ways. That assistance may be directly aiding the emergency effort in the field or in the Agency Operations Center (AOC).
  • Lead and/or assist with the instruction of NFPA courses to fire service partners on fire inspection and fire investigation related certifications.
  • Represent the State Fire Marshal at meeting such as; the local county Fire Defense Board, Oregon Fire Marshals’ Association, International Association of Arson Investigators, and other professional groups.
  • May be asked to participate on OSFM and statewide task force(s), local committees, and advisory groups formed by other agencies, organizations related to fire investigation, inspection, and enforcement activities.
  • Form partnerships with building officials, fire departments/districts, and other government agencies.
  • Review local fire and life safety code compliance program operations with local fire officials to assess community needs and adherence to fire prevention service and protection standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five years of full-time fire service experience. This must include two years of full-time code enforcement and one year of fire cause investigation.
  • An Associate degree in fire prevention, fire science, or related fire service field may substitute for up to two years of the required experience but will not substitute for the three years of code enforcement and fire cause investigation experience.

A Bachelor's degree in fire service administration or fire protection, fire science, or closely related fire service field may substitute for up to two years of the required experience but will not substitute for the three years of code enforcement and fire cause investigation experience.

Are you already PERS eligible?  Then this position’s salary range is $7,673 - $9,708 with 6.95% going to PERS.

Not PERS eligible yet?  Then this position’s salary range is $7,176 - $9,076 until you are PERS eligible, generally in six months.
