The mission of the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is ‘To protect citizens, their property, and the environment from fire and hazardous materials.’

The Fire & Life Safety (FLS) Division is mandated by law to perform duties to enhance fire and life safety for the citizens and visitors of Oregon. The FLS Division directs and coordinates fire investigations to determine cause and origin, fire and life safety inspections of public buildings and certain state licensed facilities, storage and use of combustibles, inspection of institutional occupancies, and maintains the Exempt Jurisdiction Program to assure the safety of of all places where large numbers of persons work, live or congregate. The Division also supports OSFM’s State Mobilization Plan by providing field support from the local assigned Deputy State Fire Marshal to assist with evaluating needs on emerging incidents. There are two Units within the FLS Division; the Technical Services Unit and the Field Operations Unit.

There are currently (2) Supervising Deputy State Fire Marshal positions available, (1) in the Technical Services Unit and (1) in the Eastern Region, Field Operations Unit.

The Technical Services Unit is responsible for Oregon Fire Code development and adoption, code interpretation, technical research, plan review, maintaining the exempt jurisdiction program, inspection of state prisons and buildings, and coordinates the fire and life safety surveys of CMS funded healthcare facilities. The Technical Services Unit partners with Oregon’s Building Codes Division and local fire service jurisdictions in maintaining code consistency.

The Field Operations Unit delivers services statewide in (2) geographical areas, Eastern Region and Western Region, comprising of (13) Deputy State Fire Marshals. The responsibility of this unit is to conduct fire and life safety inspections, origin and cause fire investigations, assist with plan review for fire department access & water supply, coordination of training with community organizations, participates with industry associations, collaborates with local fire and building officials, and responds to emerging incidents as needed.
