There’s a lucky Penny in North Kitsap.
After Penny, a 24-year-old horse, got stuck in deep mud Thursday evening near Kingston, North Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews were able to pull the mare to safety.
The horse’s owner was riding her on trails near his Wyant Road home when she became mired in mud. After about an hour of trying to pull her free, the owner called 911 for help about 4:45 p.m.
According to an NKFR new release, four firefighters responded and used a combination of ropes to shift Penny’s position and get her to firmer ground.
After an exam by a veterinarian, the horse appeared to have no serious injuries.
Firefighters are not always available to help in animal rescues, NKFR spokeswoman Michele Laboda said. “If the effort puts firefighters in excessive danger or threatens their readiness to respond to other incidents, we might not be able to help,” she said.
Crews were happy to be able to help Penny in this case, Laboda said
