For Zillah resident Jeff Deardorff his alarm Wednesday morning was an emergency alert message. “It's quite surprising this early in the morning my wife and I kind of panicked a little bit at first you know what are we going to do what about the animals, so we thought the best thing to do was to get our hats and coats on and go to the middle school where they said to evacuate to," said Jeff Deardorff. Around 7:28a.m the Zillah Fire Department responded to an ammonia leak at Stadelman’s Fruit. When firefighters arrived they immediately set up an evacuation plan for nearby residents. Residents were sent to Zillah Middle School and were advised to stay there until further notice. At about 9:42a.m. the Sunnyside ammonia team made entry to the warehouse and were able to shut off the valves around 10:37 a.m.
