After a fire swept through an Oakland warehouse last weekend, killing 36 and leaving rescue crews facing a grim recovery effort, the Seattle fire chief reviewed how the city investigates code violations inside derelict buildings. Chief Harold Scoggins said Seattle has a multi-agency effort to immediately shut down buildings deemed to be in violation. “Whenever you see these events that take place it makes you pause and think about what steps your organization is taking to ensure the public safety,” Scoggins said. A spokesman for Mayor Ed Murray’s office said that over the last two years the city has expanded its team that focuses on potentially dangerous activities inside warehouses and derelict buildings.
