Dozens of people packed into an Auburn gym on Tuesday night to try to get answers about a recent string of arsons. Seventeen fires have been set since mid-September, and police say they're doing everything they can to figure out who's setting the blazes. But nervous homeowners say they're worried they could be next. "Now I'm like looking out all the time - every little noise," says Auburn homeowner Margaret Thornton. "I'm scared." Every time she leaves to go visit her husband at the hospital she wonders if her home will still be standing when she returns. It sits a couple of miles down the road from where six fires were set last week. "The fear for me right now is to not be able to leave my home," she says. Similar fears brought more than 100 people to Tuesday night's town meeting. They want answers - but answers are hard to come by, especially for victims like Linda Hays, whose rental home was torched on Nov. 9 Her great-granddaughter's toys sit charred on a shelf. "The worst part is the trauma that she had to go through and that she will go through. And it's just not fair," Hays says. Investigators still aren't sure if all of the arsons are connected - most were set between the hours of 6 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. Auburn police are working with federal authorities to figure out who's behind them. For now, everyone is being asked to remain vigilant. They're also being advised to clear trash and leaves away from their homes, make sure all windows and doors are locked, keep outside lights on at night and make sure their smoke detectors are working.
