A structure fire on Orcas Island, the second in 24 hours, was suppressed and contained by more than 20 Orcas Island Fire & Rescue volunteers, personnel, and six pieces of fire apparatus. The fire broke out Monday afternoon, November 23, 2015 in a downstairs bedroom of a house on Raccoon Point. The blaze extended out the window into the decking as well as the room directly above the fire. One of the occupants of the home sustained a minor injury for which they received treatment. Two dogs were successfully rescued from the home, unfortunately, in addition to property damage, the occupants lost two cats and two birds in the fire. According to Orcas Island Fire and Rescue Chief Preysz, “due to the phenomenal job by the crew, the fire was stopped short of getting into the roof and attic there by saving the structure and all the remaining living spaces. However, the home did sustain extensive smoke damage throughout.” Orcas Island Fire & Rescue received additional response from four members of San Juan Island Fire Department and five members of Lopez Island Fire Department. These support units were utilized for crew relief and fire watch during the night and into the morning before returning to their respective islands. "Thank you so much for the quick, supportive mutual aid," said Chief Preysz. OIFR was also active with additional fire suppression to the fire scene on Apple Tree Lane. Hot spots from that fire, which occurred on November 22, continue to require attention and monitoring through the night and through today Tuesday, November 24, 2015. In addition to the fire crews, Orcas Island Fire and Rescue Auxiliary continued their role throughout the 36-hour time frame providing hot meals, drinks and crew-saving coffee.
