When the Ames Fire Department presents awards to new and current firefighters at their ceremony later this month, there will be an unfamiliar feeling present throughout the room. According to Ames Fire Chief Shawn Bayouth, though this is the fourth awards ceremony in a row the department has put on, it is the first one without former firefighter Steve Buser. “To see him get an award for this, I just wish it could’ve been sooner, so we could’ve recognized him when he was still alive,” Bayouth said. “It’ll probably be tough for everybody.” Buser, along with three other firefighters in his crew will receive a CPR award for a Nov. 2016 incident in which they were able to revive a man who had fallen in his home and had no pulse. According to Bayouth the victim’s sister began performing CPR on him, before police arrived, at which point they used the defibrillator to shock the victim twice. Buser and his crew were able to revive the man with CPR, and the victim was later released from the hospital.
