A massive, three-alarm fire destroyed a home in the Makiki area on Thursday morning. The Honolulu Fire Department said 15 fire companies with 60 personnel responded to the blaze, which was first reported around 4:30 a.m. at 1234 Matlock Ave. The blaze was so large that flames spread to a neighboring home and a nearby apartment building. Flames could also be seen from the H-1 Freeway. A woman in her 80s, who was in one of the neighboring residences, was treated for smoke inhalation and transferred to the hospital as a precaution, HFD said. Residents on scene told Hawaii News Now the one-story home where the fire sparked had been abandoned for about a year, and had been occupied by homeless people since then. The fire was fully extinguished by 7 a.m. The cause of the fire as well as damage estimates have yet to be determined.
