When Steven Somers began his firefighting career, he started out as a 16-year-old high school volunteer.
At that time, Somers admitted he had no idea that the job he has come to love so much would someday take him all the way to the top. But it has.
It was made official Tuesday night when the 54-year-old Somers was named the new fire chief of Fire Rescue.
Somers, whose firefighting career has now spanned nearly 30 years, said he found out about the decision to name him the county’s new fire chief in a telephone call he received from Baldwin County Commissioner Sammy Hall earlier Tuesday.
