Fire Chief David Berardesca will officially step away from the community Oct. 12, according to a joint announcement issued with Mayor Curt B. Leng Tuesday after the town wound its way through determining his status.
Berardesca retired Sunday, as required under the Hamden Employee Retirement Plan. The plan mandates that all public safety employees retire at age 65 and he recently reached the milestone. He was expected to stay on, though. status.

A contract that would have extended Berardesca’s tenure through the end of the year, allowing for the search for his replacement, was submitted to the Legislative Council. But it was pulled Monday before it was acted on.
Instead, Berardesca will work through Oct. 12, according to the announcement, easing the department through the transition with Deputy Chief Gary Merwede. This will be on a part-time basis, Leng said.
