According to a recent study by the National Fire Protection Association, you're more likely to die in a home fire today then you were 30 years ago. That's because newer homes are built differently. The Grand Junction Fire Department says the open floor plans help fires move quicker. The plastics used in glue and siding burns quicker and releases toxic fumes. It’s also important to make sure you clean things like chimneys, and laundry dryers. GJFD says you only have about 3 minutes to escape from a home fire today. Years ago, you had about ten minutes. "The time you have to safely get out of your home is much shorter now due to the materials that your house is built of so it's important to be proactive and make plans and practice with your family to be safe,” said Dirk Klingman with the Grand Junction Fire Department.
