Gila County has limited recourse for code complaints

Pine’s Trident Winery and Pine Ice have both provoked complaints from neighbors in recent weeks. Gila County community development officials have fielded the complaints, but have limited recourse. As previously reported in the Roundup, even if fines are charged due to code enforcement violations, the county does not have an effective means to collect the fines if the negligent party chooses not to pay. Currently, the ordinance has no real “teeth.” The county can send letters; hold hearings on violations; and impose fines in the event hearing officers uphold the finding of a violation, but has no way of collecting those fines.
