The death of a 63-year-old man in a December apartment fire on Birmingham’s Southside has been deemed a homicide and a suspect is now behind bars. Carley Eugene Vinson was pulled from a burning vacant apartment complex by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service on Dec. 27. Firefighters were called to the former site of Plaza Square Apartments in the 1600 block of 20th Street South about 8 p.m. Vinson and another person were removed from the building. Vinson was taken to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m. BFRS officials said the fire was contained to one unit on the top floor. Two units on either side of the burning unit sustained smoke damage.
