One of the two Opelika firefighters injured Thursday afternoon during a fire training exercise remains in hospital care for second-degree burns.
The names of the injured firefighters are being withheld to “provide them and their families’ privacy as they recover,” according to a city of Opelika press release Friday morning.
Two Opelika Fire Department firefighters were injured at approximately 4 p.m. Thursday while performing routine fire training exercises in an abandoned house located on the 2700 block of Anderson Road, authorities said.
The injuries were described as “serious,” according to Opelika Police Capt. Bobby Kilgore on Thursday.
One firefighter was airlifted to University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital for second-degree burns, the release said.
