A fire on Chena Hot Springs Road has left one family displaced after a furnace ignited inside the home. A house near 17 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road caught fire at around 11 a.m. Tuesday after homeowner Randy Cheap turned on his furnace. Cheap built the home almost 40 years ago, and it was the family homestead he raised his children in. Cheap says he attempted to throw water at the furnace, but it seemed to just flare the fire up, so he got himself and his dog out quickly. Cheap ran to the neighbor's to call for help. Unfortunately, his house is not in a fire district, so not much could be done to save the home. Cheap says he is thankful for his neighbors who came out to assist the best they could.
