An FDNY firefighter is dead after falling nearly 60 feet off the Mill Basin Bridge in Brooklyn Sunday night.
Fire officials say Steven Pollard, 30, of Ladder Company 170 was responding to a two-car accident with injuries around 10 p.m. on the bridge along the Belt Parkway.
NY1 is told he slipped through a gap in the bridge and fell 52 feet into a construction site below, as he crossed from the eastbound to the westbound lanes.
Pollard was with the department less than two years, and comes from a long line of firefighters.
"Firefighter Pollard's dad is a longtime member of the FDNY, his brother's a member of the FDNY. This is a family that's done so much for New York City and now they're going through this loss, this pain and it's a very, very tough situation," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.
"It's a very sad night for the Pollard family, for the fire department family and for the city. One and a half years on the job, Stephen Pollard was just starting out in his life tonight and the process of helping others," said FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro.
A full investigation into the accident is now underway.
