Fire Chief Ken March's "personal reasons" for resigning last week were illuminated in a letter submitted to the interim town manager.
"I can no longer subject myself to the absence of integrity, morals and ethics that are an ingrained part of this department," March wrote after stating that the workplace "has manifested into an environment that is toxic as well as hostile."
He blamed actions or inaction by the town administration and officers of the Wilmington Fire Department for the shift in dynamics. His resignation was announced at the Wednesday night Select Board meeting. His last day as fire chief and emergency management director is June 2.
In the letter received by Interim Town Manager Gretchen Havreluk on May 15, March wrote that he was appointed with goals established by the hiring committee and town manager at the time. One of the goals had been to "move this department forward" and bring about some changes, he said.
