Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District
Location: Carpinteria, CA
Just 12 miles southeast of Santa Barbara, Carpinteria (called “Carp” by locals) is a charming, coastal community. Summerland is nestled on a hillside overlooking the ocean and Channel Islands. The community of over 22,000 residents boasts many recreational activities including world class surfing breaks such as Rincon Point, cycling along coastal Highway 1 and hiking in the Los Padres National Forest. The Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District covers over 40 square miles bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, to the eastern edge of the Los Padres National Forest, and bordered from north to south by the City of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara/Ventura County line.
The new Fire Chief will be tasked with maintaining the District’s reputation as a pre-eminent fire service agency. This leadership challenge will require an emphasis on a culture that values teamwork, collaboration, communication and partnership. Organizational planning, both on an operational and strategic basis, will be essential. Staff development in the areas of training, education, and towards succession planning are essential aspects of this role, as the District must focus on future leadership needs and the changing nature of fire and emergency services. The Chief must maintain and build upon the environment of mutual respect and credibility at all levels of the department and one which embraces the critical importance of mentorship and continuous improvement throughout the organization. The Chief will also create an environment that nurtures diversity in the fire service.
The required background includes three or more years of command and administrative experience at a command staff level or higher, combined with a strong knowledge of fire services including suppression, prevention, training, emergency management and ALS. A Bachelor’s degree in Business/Public Administration or a related field is required. An MA/MS along with a California Chief Officer Certification or completion of the National Fire Academy Executive Officer program is highly desirable.
