Snohomish County, Washington, is located twelve miles north of Seattle, and is situated between the sparkling waters of Puget Sound and the snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Mountains. The county has major urban centers, historic villages, rural retreats and seaside ports, and is a recreational mecca with a temperate climate that encourages year-round outdoor activities. Snohomish County has a population of approximately 717,000 and is one of the largest and fastest growing counties in the state. The administrative headquarters for Snohomish County Fire District 1 are located in Everett, which is the county's largest city and seat of county government, with a population of over 100,000.


Snohomish County Fire District 1 is the largest fire department in the county and one of the largest fire districts in the state. The district operates out of 12 stations and has a service area of approximately 45 square miles, serving a population of approximately 214,000 in unincorporated southwest Snohomish County, along with the cities of Brier, Edmonds, and Mountlake Terrace. Services include fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical, HAZMAT, fire prevention, emergency management, and public safety education. The district is governed by a board of five commissioners, has a 2017 personnel and operations budget of $45.4 million, and is staffed by 231 FTE's. District staffing currently is comprised of uniformed staff represented by IAFF Local 1828, exempt management staff, and non-exempt/non-union administrative staff. In an average year, the district responds to more than 20,000 calls. 


Working under the Board of Fire Commissioners and supervising all district personnel, the Fire Chief administers and directs all activities of the district, ensuring that all operations and programs are efficiently and effectively carried out.


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Business Administration, Public Administration or a closely related field, and a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible fire service chief officer experience in a comparable size department is required. Applicants should have advanced fire service or management training such as NFA Executive Fire Officer Program; CFOD is highly desirable. A master's degree in Business or Public Administration is preferred, along with experience working through consolidations or mergers. Candidates may possess any combination of relevant education and experience that demonstrates their ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
