The City of Cheney is seeking to fill our open Fire Chief position. 

The City of Cheney is a full-service city of 11,400 residents.  We are home to Eastern Washington University, a regional public university with over 12,000 students.  Cheney is located 17 miles from Spokane and offers a great quality of life for families and those enjoying outdoor activities.

The Cheney Fire Department is a combination career/volunteer department, which provides full-service fire protection, fire prevention, hazardous materials response, rescue, and emergency medical services to over 11,400 residents and Eastern Washington University.  The department responds to approximately 1,461 calls annually out of one station.

Fire Department staff consist of paid volunteers, four residents, nine full-time line firefighters, an administrative assistant, and a Chief.  Employees work out of one station that houses two engines, one pumper/ladder truck, a medical unit, a support unit, and two brush trucks.

This key position reports to the City Administrator and performs a variety of technical, administrative, and supervisory work in planning, organizing, directing, and implementing fire prevention, suppression, and emergency medical services to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property by fire and emergency medical situations.

Due to the nature of the work, this position works a Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule, but will be required to work additional hours either before or after the scheduled work day in order to support ongoing initiatives.

The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or a closely related field, ten years of fire service operational experience, and five years of experience as a supervisor within the fire service.  A Bachelor’s degree or higher in any discipline may substitute for the degree in Fire Science if the individual has completed formal coursework in Fire Science.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered for recruitment purposes.  Successful candidate will be required to pass a thorough reference and background check.  Additional special requirements for the position are listed in the job description.

The salary range for this position is $79,620-$100,788 depending on education and experience of the candidate.  The City provides an excellent benefit package, including paid sick and vacation leave, medical, dental, vision, EAP, state retirement, 457 deferred compensation plan with a City match, life insurance, and long-term disability.  Additionally, the City provides compensation for professional memberships and conferences.
